When Peter and Sylvia Jex-Blake purchased 107 Disraeli Street in 2007, the Sunshine Brewery was the only tenant.  The balance of the site consisted of the original Gisborne Sheepfarmers warehouse, and the original Sheepfarmers manager's residence.  In search of a use for the warehouse, Peter came across the Self Storage industry.  Contact was made with a consultant, who put together a plan to convert the site into a self storage facility.  Hence, the beginning of Self Storage Gisborne.

The site was developed in stages as demand grew.  By 2013 the business had approximately 180 storage units and had outgrown the site, so additional land was purchased at 75 Main Road, Makaraka and 12 Halbert Street.  Today the company rents out a total of 360 storage units and 100 shipping containers, and by the end of 2020, was again looking for additional land upon which to expand.

In February 2021, the company purchased 74 Main Road, Makaraka - previously occupied by Thompson Contracting.  Plans are underway to develop the rear of the site into Self Storage, with potential for a further 180 storage units.

The growth, particularly in the last 18 months, has been phenomenal, reflecting the growth seen across the whole local economy.  It would appear anecdotally that Gisborne is growing, with many people moving to Gisborne for a better lifestyle.  However, the shortage of housing has created major issues for a lot of people, creating a large demand for storage.

Renting a storage unit is also a good option for businesses wanting to store extra stock, and for tradespeople to keep gear safe and secure.  Smaller units are also used for document storage by accountancy and legal firms.

Self Storage Gisborne have over 20 different unit sizes, from 6m x 3m, down to small 2m x 1m cubicles.  The company has invested heavily in  state of the art security, access and CCTV systems, and is the only industry accredited facility in Gisborne.

Customers have the free use of a furniture trailer to move their goods in.

The company is extremely grateful for the services of its manager, Polly Taukamo, who has been with the company since 2014. Polly provides exceptional customer service and care and makes the moving-in process totally hassle free, offering free advice on each person's requirements, unit size, and payment options.

Self Storage Gisborne is proud to be a Gold Sponsor for the Gisborne Sunrise Foundation, and to be one of the founders of the fund established to send fourteen Year 12 students to Outward Bound each year.  We are also the Principal Sponsor for N Z and World Champions, Horouta Waka Hoe.  Supporting and giving young people the opportunity to lead healthier and fitter lives is a prerequisite to having a healthy and vibrant community.
