Paul and Kelly Roberts started their business Roberts Tree Surgeons from scratch 12 years ago. Today the company is a strong team of 10 full time staff.
Roberts Tree Surgeons are the one-stop shop for tree removal, tree maintenance and tree planting.
The majority of their work is tree and garden maintenance of private clients and large infrastructure clients in and around the Gisborne area which also extends south to Wairoa and north to the boundary and includes State Highway vegetation clearance.
They are Eastland Network approved and help maintain trees in the district to ensure they don't impact on power lines. They also maintain the state house properties for Housing NZ.
Equally important to them is the restoration of trees to the landscape. For example, the planting of a copper beech tree in the Gisborne District Council rose garden to replace the iconic willow tree damaged during a storm in 2015.
It has given them great satisfaction to see the effect of their recent clean-up of the phoenix palms by the Waikanae stream. Their ongoing involvement with the clean-up of this area includes survey work for GDC to identify trees and their condition along the new cycleways and parks that adjoin them.
Paul is originally from North Wales and met Gisborne girl Kelly Gray while both working in Auckland in 2000. They came to Gisborne in 2003 to be close to family and to start their own business while growing their own family. The couple have three children aged between four and 10, which as any parent and business owner will know, has meant some challenging times. They are also in the process of building a house and developing their own self-sustained lifestyle block which is entirely off the grid.
With the support of a fantastic group of hard-working employees Paul manages the business and Kelly looks after the finances.
The team's hard work has paid off. Two years ago they received public recognition when they won two awards at the Westpac Business Awards - the Small Business Excellence trophy and Professionals & Service Excellence.
Spring is one of the busiest times for the company. As the exclusive stockists of mushroom compost in Gisborne, which is trucked in from Hawkes Bay, gardeners can arrange to come to their yard and buy it by the bag, trailer or truckload. This high-quality compost has a massively complex structure and provides great nutrition for the soil. They are open Saturday mornings over the spring-summer season for drop-ins.
Their philosophy is simple: "We love trees and taking care of them is our business."
