Staff member in the spotlight

Ryan Trethewey

What is your current role at Graham & Dobson?

My current role in Graham & Dobson is tax accounting as part of Richard’s team.  I started out at the firm as a junior in 2007 and recently became a Chartered Accountant with CAANZ.  I also provide internal IT support for the firm.

Where are you from originally?

Born and bred in Gisborne.  Lived and raised here my whole life.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love fishing and will go as often as I can.  It doesn’t matter what kind of fishing, as long as it is fishing. Most of my fishing is saltwater fishing, though I must say I probably enjoy fly fishing for trout the most.

What do you consider to be your best decision in life?

I originally started my working life as a shepherd on a station at Rere, then made the decision to move into town and take up accounting.  While I miss some aspects of farm life, I think moving back into town has been the best decision I’ve made.

What is your favourite memory?

When my sister and I were teens our parents would take us to Turangi for our annual family holiday. I would fish the mighty Tongariro river, walking many kilometres up and down the river. I have many fond memories of the scenery and the people I met along the river who shared a passion for fishing.

What is your favourite quote?

My favourite quote is the one that helped me get started on my CA journey after I read it.  I’m not sure who it’s attributed to, but the quote, paraphrased is:

“When you try, you find out more - more about the world, about other people, and about yourself; what you can do, how far you can go.  Trying can be easy or hard, exciting or scary.  Sometimes you might wonder why you’re trying at all.  It doesn’t matter, give it a try.  Better to have a go than be a no-show.”

Related to this is another famous quote - “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
